Veteran actor John Savage, best known for his roles in “The Deer Hunter” and TV and the “Twin Peaks” revival, attends the annual Movieguide Awards each year to remind himself of how powerful an impact independent films can have on the movie industry as a whole.
Savage shared with GeekRockTV that independent films have more room to invest in the world of imagination through the exploration of diversity, something that we don’t always get to see in big box office hits.
“… I think that’s the gift of our country: we don’t have a culture,” explained Savage. “We’re still growing, and the more that we work at growing with those people and those cultures, we’re not only doing the world a favor, we’re dong ourselves a favor because of the spirit that exists here. We just gotta keep making movies and sharing that spirit.”
It can be difficult to break down cultural barriers in an industry as cut throat as film. This is not news to Savage, who encourages aspiring actors and filmmakers to stay dedicated to their craft, even when times get tough. Savage continued to emphasize the importance of “keeping the spirit.”
“… keep that spirit going, that love of the work and of the arts. Enjoy it. It’s going to be frustrating. A lot … But there’s always other people that can help you out. Don’t try to do it all by yourself, alright?”

Host: Hi John! How are you? Thank you so much for joining us.
John: I’m good thank you.

Host: **Laughs** We’ll put that in the blooper section, how about that?
John: Okay.
Host: Welcome to the 23rd Annual Movieguide Awards, and guess what guys? I’m here with John Savage. How are you?
John: I’m good, thank you. Nice to see you again.
Host: You too. So what brings you out here tonight?
John: Oh, I got this invitation to an awards ceremony, and when I realized what it was, I was so excited. I love the way they title it “For Faith and Freedom,” and that’s kinda why I got into the business.
Host: Really?
John: I think it was. I didn’t really know what it was when I started as a little boy; I was able to read and my imagination was fed through great performances and music. I just love the stories that we can find and film.
Host: Well as a veteran actor, have you seen a lot of this going on or is this the kind of things that has become a comeback lately?
John: My biggest area of discovery, because it’s constant in the area of the arts, is the fact that I have been able to go and work with other people in different countries with different languages and see their stories from there. Just to go back and reflect on the independent films that are starting to be more active. We don’t see them in the big movie theaters as much as we’d like, because when some of them are really done from the heart in Charleston, Mississippi or Atlanta, Georgia. Some little areas that we don’t get to, we get to share that with America.
Host: Isn’t that amazing?
John: It’s not always our image of who is an American. We have over 180 cultures in LA. It must be more in the whole country.
Host: Oh, absolutely.
John: And I think that’s the gift of our country: we don’t have a culture. We’re still growing, and the more that we work at growing with those people and those cultures, we’re not only doing the world a favor, we’re dong ourselves a favor because of the spirit that exists here. We just gotta keep making movies and sharing that spirit.
Host: So are there any other projects that we should keep an eye out for you in the future?
John: I got to do a film that I felt was one of the films that is really touching on today, with a wonderful young actress, Michelle Monaghan, and it’s called “Fort Bliss.” That’s a real fort down in Texas. A big one. She plays a young woman who’s a medic in Afghanistan. She also has a child and a husband, and she’s going back for several tours because it’s her duty. This world we living in is getting all shook up, you know? There are so many areas of our lives that we can’t really see, except the black and white newspaper or the stories on TV that may not tell the whole story. This gets a little closer to the story. I think we need that. We need help understanding the world and our own worlds, like we’re doing right now. I talk too much, but I’m so inspired.
Host: This is great information.
John: Being apart of this and the good people that are here. This is why I became an actor.
Host: I was actually really looking forward to seeing you tonight so I’m actually really glad that you were here and able to share this as a veteran actor because you’ve been in the industry for quite some time. You’ve got all the insights. Is there any advice that you have for those future aspiring actors and filmmakers who want to get into this industry now?
John: I would just say, don’t drink too much, but keep that spirit going, that love of the work and of the arts. Enjoy it. It’s going to be frustrating. A lot.
Host: Oh yeah.
John: But there’s always other people that can help you out. Don’t try to do it all by yourself, alright?
Host: Especially when we have you there as our mentor, that’s awesome.
John: I appreciate that. Well I was going to say something better than that: your teachers.
