2015 | New Kids On The Block: The Main Event

Boy band New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) regrouped in 2015 to host their summer tour: The Main Event with Nelly and two members of TLC as openers. Nelly kicked off the show with hits like “Just a Dream” and “Hot in Here”. Waving his hands in the air and even showing off a few hip hop moves to the beginning of a Michael Jackson song, he prepared the crowd for the next opener, the girl group TLC who did not let their entrance go unnoticed. Giant fluttering white fans formed a tent structure in the middle of the stage and once lifted, the two women appeared from underneath in gold glittering overalls. TLC not only sang hits from their 90s and early 2000s stardom like “No Scrubs” and “Waterfalls,” they performed expertly choreographed dance routines hitting every beat with fluid movements.

Now for the main event, the arena darkened and just the suspended screen in the middle of the arena lit up with a video of an announcer questioning the audience “are you ready?” as a picture of the five members from NKOTB appeared (Jonathan and Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood). All five individually were introduced by the announcer including their weight class as if it were a wrestling match. Each made their way to center stage with their black hoods up and faces lowered until the music rose. Confetti shot out of cannons and fog cascaded over the stage as they sung “After Party”. The stage set up included a multilevel rising platform and even a catwalk extending out into the audiences providing fans with plenty of close proximity. After a costume change which was broadcasted on the screen for the audience to see backstage, the group reentered in black suits. The mood of the performance mellowed as the group swayed in choreographed formations. During “We Own Tonight,” some group members took the time to connect to the audience, even reaching down to grasp fan’s hands. After another break, the group picked up the pace singing while a lively pianist played on a grand piano mid-stage. NKOTB even got up close and personal with the audience inviting a few ladies onto the stage for a dance party to “Good Vibrations” a song by Mark Wahlberg, brother of Donnie, when he was in a hip hop group called Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

Understandably, with an older fan base following the group since the late 80s and early 90s, NKOTB needed to keep the balance of old and modern elements. Their original songs along with more recent additions assisted in maintaining such a balance. In addition, the incorporation of an eccentric stage set up while preventing the features from overpowering their singing and individual personalities, are the elements which kept the audience entertained. Keep a lookout for NKOTB because they are touring again this time with Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty By Nature, Tiffany, and Debbie Gibson at the Viejas Arena on May 23, 2019.
