Drew Powell

While we know him as Butch Gilzean, the badass mobster of Fox’s Gotham, Drew Powell who brings the character to life is a very light hearted and down to earth human being. Ever since the show’s start on September 22nd 2014 (Imdb.com) the fandom has been growing and wanting more from the Batman based drama. Butch’s place in the shows has evolved from a simple Hit-man to now sitting atop a thrown commanding Hit-men of his own. The progression of Butch Gilzean has always left viewers interested and fellow characters curious and so it was a pleasure to see his take on where the character stands, where he wants to see Butch in the future, and where the show as a whole can go.

From the get-go Powell had a very disarming attitude and anyone could tell that he is passionate about being Butch Gilzean. As the character has grown, Powell described him as a bit of a hardened softee especially when dealing with his love interest, Tabitha (played by Jessica Lucas), and their relationship to fellow antagonist Barbra Keen. With the internal struggles that Butch has dealt with, like conflicting allegiances to Fish Mooney and Penguin, it’s hard to disagree with Powell’s description of Gotham as a melting pot of good versus evil and who gets filed into which category. Powell also expresses his future aspirations for his character, mainly more attention to a character that has been more and more prevalent on screen. He would like to see more of Butch’s origin and back-story and while I’m sure fans would love to see Butch’s roots I find that a progression towards Solomon Grundy is on the Horizon. Powell also noted how he enjoyed the music for the show and is interested in a potential musical themed episode, while he does not think it’s a possibility other cast members like Cory Michael Smith (who plays Riddler) have his back on and off screen.
