Sean Pertwee

Authentic British accent aside, Sean Pertwee was the optimal choice for Alfred in Fox’s Gotham. The dynamic between him and Bruce is iconic to say the least and Pertwee, while charismatic off screen, dives into some dark and serious themes for the show. Having gone through his own trials Alfred is no stranger to tragedy, which aids in the level of strength the relationship between himself and the soon to be caped crusader. Alfred has looked death in the face and still continues to surprise us with not only physical prowess but moral guidance alike and so we are intrigued to see where these qualities will put Alfred amidst all the chaos of Gotham.

Pertwee, like many other characters, has noted how we will see things get dark for Alfred and that the relationship between him and Bruce will intensify as a result. Alfred had his friend Reggie nearly kill him, his old war buddy come back to haunt him and so we hope to see how his background will expand as well as conquer his dark past. A dark past that Bruce can relate to all too well and so the two are mutually symbiotic, they both need one another to triumph over the poor hand they were dealt. Even though Bruce and Alfred create great tensions, Pertwee notes how there is a good that comes from the dysfunction and how the relationship needed to fall apart in order to be put back together. Pertwee notes how he is the most excited for season 4 rather than the past seasons and describes how he will be one of a few mentors for Bruce while the streets of Gotham are carved up into a new order.
