Members of the cast and crew of the CBS series Star Trek: Discovery sit down with the GeekRockTV team to answer some of our burning questions.
It’s always a pleasure to see that the people working in a franchise love it as much as the hard-core fans do, and that is exactly the case with Star Trek: Discovery. We talked with the writers, cinematographer, production designers, and more to get their stories about working on the newest show in the groundbreaking Star Trek universe. Everyone we sat down with self-identified as a huge Star Trek fan even before the series came into their lives. They all have their own stories with the franchise, but the entire creative team says they have loved it for a long time. Having such huge Star Trek fans on various teams, especially the design team, helps the process and the authenticity of the show immensely. Though no one can tell us much of anything about what audiences will see in the future of the show, they promise that there is more greatness to come. The writers tell us that there are so many possibilities for the story, and that we will discover so many big things this season, particularly after the Learning Center bombing at the end of the first season.
The creative team has a fine line to walk between being a show in a huge, world-wide franchise and forging their own unique path. The heart of the show has always been, and will always be, the story, so everyone on the creative team is focused on following the story wherever it will take them. Modern HD creates problems for production teams trying to do things the traditional way, because they just don’t look as good anymore. When it comes to costumes in particular, they are doing their best to honor everything that came before it in the Star Trek universe while also making Discovery as real as they can. The overall design of the show happens because of endless communication between departments of the production team. Everyone is constantly thinking of how things work and relate to each other, a process that is made more interesting and dynamic by the fact that the series’ design is an amalgamation of lots of different Star Trek iterations.
It is wonderful to hear about the work that goes into Star Trek: Discovery directly from the people who pour their hearts and souls into this project every day.
Meet the creative minds from behind the scenes who brought the world of Star Trek back to TV. From the writers’ room to VFX, music, SFX makeup, prosthetics, and more, hear from the talented creators and artists who took the world from idea to streaming on CBS ALL ACCESS. | Making of Star Trek: Discovery
