Matt Ryan’s Interview: Every single version that I have ever seen of John Constantine, whether that be the Keanu Reeves or the Justice League Dark or even the appearance of Legends of Tomorrow, has left me speechless. The character has absolutely grown in popularity over the years and who could ask why, he is so obviously one of the best DC has to offer and we all love Matt Ryan playing him in all versions. First seeing him at the panel and then in the press room was great and we talked a lot about the character, which Ryan clearly has a high affection for, and even got to explore the differences between his live action and animated performances. Ryan is passionate about playing Constantine and I think it’s safe to say that gives us the best possible performance we as fans could ask for.
It’s also interesting to note the John Constantine is bisexual however Ryan doesn’t even put that label on him because he simply goes with the moment whether that be man, woman, or demon. It goes without saying that Constantine: City of Demons will not be intended for children not only due to the gory nature but also because of the serious theme found in the character development of both Constantine and Chaz Kramer. Ryan praises the writers for providing an excellent script but he too is familiar with giving a great performance having a plethora of comic book knowledge and even tells us he would love to get a Dangerous Habits project going. He can be funny and dark, morbid and miraculous so don’t miss out on Constantine: City of Demons or you might find yourself on the wrong end of a possession.
J.M Matteis’s Interview: While we praised Matt Ryan for his abilities of bringing the character of John Constantine to life, J.M Matteis is a big contributor to how the character truly makes us laugh and cringe. We got to sit down with the writer behind the character and pick his brain about Constantine: City of Demons as well as get a few insights on the comic book industry as well. This guy truly knows his stuff is it was a pleasure to sit down with such an acclaimed veteran who still gives us amazing characters and keeps up on the recent renditions of our favorites.
We got into the dark tone of how this mini-series will play out and Matteis talked about how easy it was for the character to speak through him and that this is one of his favorite projects he has ever worked on. Matteis also described how the core of the story can’t only matter to him but it must matter for the character, he has to get the motivation right by pulling from past versions while finding, as he puts it, “a new wrinkle” so as to provide something new. He also praises the graphic novel for being a good foundation to work from and how fans will be able to easily pick out the Easter eggs while others will be able to enjoy it just as much. We also brought up the sexuality behind John Constantine and Matteis actually agreed with Ryan stating that he isn’t a bisexual but actually called him a “omnisexual” where he will go for a man woman or creature. This will surely turn a few heads and I can’t stress enough how important this one will be to any fans of animation or DC so be sure to mark your calendars for the latest screen time appearance of John Constantine.
Peter Girardi’s Interview: The build up for Constantine: City of Angels is really getting heavy especially as we sit down with Peter Girardi after the panel where we got an exclusive screening of the first episode. Girardi talks about some of the challenges that faced the show and even some of the stigmas behind animation in general so we are incredibly thankful to have sat down with such a respectable and knowledgeable individual. Going in depth about how one of our favorite anti-heroes allows for a more adult centered story to be told through the visual medium of anime and even some of his very own favorites that he wished he could have included. John Constantin is like that really valuable ring that is so old that the rust on it makes it look so much cooler and we couldn’t be happier that Girardi is the one helping bring him to life once again.
Because the character is such a heavy smoker, the challenge of cigarettes came up quite quick but Girardi talks about how they would put a stoge in an ash tray to help keep it as a central part of John’s identity while not promoting the use of cigarettes. People really do love John Constantine and Girardi thinks it’s due to his cynicism and jadedness but only because it’s juxtaposed with his genuine care for those he holds close. Dr. Fate is one of the characters that he wished to include, and who knows we may get another animated Constantine series after this one so it could still happen. We wrapped up with hearing Girardi talk about how while animation in the States is more geared for children, the stigma is slowly changing to reflect the norms in Europe and Japan. Us comic book geeks know this is for the better and accept it with open arms as I’m sure we will use those same open arms to clench the screen as we watch Constantine: City of Demons so don’t miss out!
