Stars of the new Freeform series Siren sit down with the GeekRockTV team to discuss mermaids, mythology, and the ocean (and the show, of course!).
Eline Powell plays Ryn, the mermaid disguised as a girl who shows up mysteriously in a small ocean-side town. Alex Roe plays Ben Pownall, a marine biologist in the town who immediately takes notice of Ryn. Both actors are incredibly interested in the show’s new portrayal of mermaids, Roe siting it as “a reason [he] signed onto the project.” Powell discusses the mythology of mermaids, noting that the image of the mermaid stems from fertility goddesses in different cultures that have evolved over time. Could there be real mermaids in our oceans? The actors answer definitively: why not? There is so much we don’t know about our oceans, so much remains unexplored, that there very well could be real mermaids. A fun fact about the filming of the show: Roe had to learn to hold his breath for 4 minutes at a time.
Dive into Freeform’s highly anticipated mermaid drama Siren before it comes to shore on March 29. In this epic tale, the coastal town of Bristol Cove, known for its legend of having been home to mermaids, is turned upside down when a mysterious girl (Eline Powell) appears and begins wreaking havoc on the small fishing town. Using their resources, marine biologists Ben (Alex Roe) and Maddie (Fola Evans-Akingbola) must work together to find out who and what drove this primal hunter of the deep sea to land and whether there more like her out there. Join series stars Eline Powell, Alex Roe, Fola Evans-Akingbola, Ian Verdun, Rena Owen, and Sibongile Mlambo along with creator Eric Wald and showrunner Emily Whitesell for a discussion about bringing mermaid mythology and mystery to television and get a sneak peek of the 2-hour series premiere. | Freeform’s Siren
