Producers Emily Whitesell and Eric Wald of the new Freeform series Siren sit down with us to answer some burning questions.
The most important question: why mermaids? Between the producers’ love of Jaws and the interesting style of mermaids in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, they fell in love with the idea of making a show with an exciting new take on a classic myth. The goal of the series was to create something that was mythological yet grounded, fantastical but real, all while creating a unique design for the merpeople. Producers Emily Whitesell and Eric Wald credit Freeform for making the series what it is, allowing them to embrace the darkness of the show and build something neither of them thought was possible on their own. The goal of the series is to keep the mythology of the merpeople real, simple, and grounded, but deep. So far there have only been mermaids, but will there be mermen? The producers will not answer, but hint at the possibility. The unique title Siren actually came from the network, and it brought new elements to the show, including the theme of obsession, that allowed it to grow to fit the title. The more danger the characters find themselves in, the more story the producers hope to get from it. Last, and possibly most important question: are mermaids real? Well, why not?
