Mermaid fans, gather round! Actors and producers from Freeform’s hit show Siren answer questions in an hour-long panel and San Diego Comic Con 2018.
The most important part of a show these days is the audience. Since the audience cares about these characters and this story, everyone working on the show is trying their hardest to make season 2 the best it can be. The audience is invested, and “they trusted us to get there so we did” says Producer Emily Wald. So much happened in season 1, and the world changed so much that the characters now have to adjust to a new way of being. Actress Eileen Powell, who plays Ryn, stresses that Ryn lost her sister and had to leave her home, so she is very lost. She is facing a whole new journey to find home in a new place, which will be a very interesting struggle to watch through the new season. Alex Roe, who plays Ben Pownall, really wants to address the question: can you trust yourself? Can you trust that your own intentions are actually good, especially given the power of the siren song? Actor Ian Verdun, who portrays Xander McClure, is excited to jump back in to the show because of how much happened with Xander last season. Now his world is shattered, and he is wracked with guilt at his impulsivity, which leaves a lot of room for self-discovery within a character.
The producers and actors all discuss how they got involved with the project at first. Though everyone had their own paths, they all knew they wanted to be a part of the series as soon as they read the first script. The actors are asked about improvising – they improvise a little, sure, but they admit that it usually doesn’t make the final cut because the writers wrote such an amazing script. The whole panel has a lengthy discussion about powerful women and matriarchal mermaids, and why that portrayal of strong women is completely necessary. Powell is asked about the siren song. Though she did it on set and in auditions, the sound artist on the show created an amazing array of special effects to make it what we hear in the show – eerie, other-worldly, and enchanting. The actors are very interested in the family dynamics within the show, particularly with creating a found family between Maddie, Ben, and Ryn.
Towards the end of the panel, everyone discusses their wants for their individual characters and the show overall. Verdun mentions wanting to move towards an equilibrium with Xander, because he had such a rough first season. We all agree that there should always be more mermaids! Roe also mentions that he wants Ben to understand the siren song and its effects, so as to better move forward with his new world. Powell wants to see a polyamorous relationship emerge between Ryn, Maddie, and Ben (though can’t confirm that it is going to happen). To round out the panel, Powell also sings her version of the haunting siren song.
