The Wonder Woman 1984 team is here at SDCC 2018! The panel with director Patty Jenkins, and stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine is as heartwarming as the first Wonder Woman movie itself.
Right off the bat, why is Chris here when his character sacrificed himself in Wonder Woman? Pine jokes: “I’m not here.” Though they can’t tell us why Pine is back, Jenkins says it is great to be back with everyone, and the whole team is incredibly excited for the world to find out why Pine is back on set! Another pressing question: Why 1984? Jenkins says she loved getting to know the WWI era during the first movie, and is excited to create an 80s movie that is entirely its own thing with Wonder Woman 1984. She elaborates that the 80s were mankind at its best and its worst, humans were experiencing things that were beautiful, wonderful, incredible, and horrible all at once, and Jenkins is excited to explore Wonder Woman’s character during mankind’s most extreme.
Though we were unable to film the new footage the team brought with them, or any discussion about it, we did record the thoughtful fan questions and great answers from Jenkins, Gadot, and Pine. Fans ask questions about everything from Wonder Woman’s social influences to which directors influence Jenkins the most. Gadot loves Wonder Woman’s scope and how much she has influenced the world and popular culture today, but there is so much information about her that the movie team filtered everything through Jenkins and the script to narrow down their goals. Pine signed onto the project initially because the goodness of Wonder Woman excited him. Jenkins loves her because she is more like us than most superheroes, which allows many people to find themselves in Diana. Her mission with the first movie, and is with this second, to stay true to the original, loving, good, kind, powerful, struggling Wonder Woman. However, they are not going to try to top the last movie. Gadot doesn’t consider this a sequel – it’s its own story, a new chapter in the Wonder Woman story. Jenkins credits many great filmmakers as her inspiration, including Richard Donner and Stephen Spielberg.
When asked about how she feels about Wonder Woman being such a strong female character and a positive role model, Gadot responds with a grin. She grew up surrounded by strong, opinionated, warm, loving, real women, everything that she brings to the role of Wonder Woman, and she is grateful to portray an extreme version of that.
