The Nightmare Before Christmas

tnbcCombining two holidays into one does not sound like a bad idea. Well, King of Halloween Town, Jack Skellington, grows tired of celebrating the townโ€™s Halloween tradition: singing the same songs, using the same decorations, and doing the same scares. Curiosity gets the best of him when he stumbles a different world that is nothing like Halloween Town, Christmas Town. Now, he wants to create his own version of Christmas.

Usually scary Halloween characters are judged as mean, violent, and murderous but the protagonist in this movie, Jack Skellington, is anything but that. Jack is a well-rounded character. He puts on his tough, leader face for his citizens, then reveals a depressed side who grows tired of their Halloween tradition every year. Jack wishes to break their tradition by doing something new in the next Halloween, so he sets on a journey to look for ideas. He stumbles upon a group of trees with oddly shaped doors that represent different holidays in a year and steps into the Christmas tree shaped door and finds himself in Christmas town. Inspired by the scenery there, he makes his way back home to tell the citizens that they will celebrate Christmas rather than Halloween next year.

One of the greatest elements of a Disney movie is its songs and this movie opens with one of the most memorable โ€œThis is Halloween.โ€ The first number describes the world our protagonist Jack lives in and his status. Another reason this movie is so engaging is when they use songs to describe the scenery of Christmas town; if Jack used regular dialogue, it would be less intriguing to watch. The songs help with character development. When Jack sings softly (when describing Christmas Town to himself) we can tell that heโ€™s curious or warm hearted & when he sings loudly (when describing Christmas traditions to his citizens) we see and hear that he is the Pumpkin King and can be scary. The songs also help when introducing the antagonist Oogie Boogie to make him seem not as scary as he is. Songs are familiar in Disney movies and this movie is highly recommended to feature in a Disney/Music movie night. Speaking of movie nights, this movie enjoyable throughout the holiday season. Fans can watch it while eating Halloween Candy or in a blanket with some hot cocoa.

Tim Burton does so well in describing the worlds of his story. From charactersโ€™ appearance to the deformed looking set pieces like slanted buildings and dead-like trees, we can easily distinguish what kind of story we are in for. Story aside, the animation is phenomenal. Major credit goes to the crew who participated in sculpting and recording every movement and facial expression of the characters. Moving pieces little by little and spending countless hours on countless images takes tons of dedication. Nonetheless, every visual, every second looks amazing in the movie and looks well worth the time. We cannot wait to see the other projects Burton and his team have in store.
