Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg are some of the most recognized superheroes in the world. When fighting together, they form the incredible Justice League. For years, audiences have waited to see this group on the big screen (myself included). Personally, I could not wait for this movie to be released. In theory, I should have loved every second of it, but that was not the case.
The two-hour movie starts off by bringing audiences into the post Superman world. Superman is gone and everyone knows it. The movie actually starts off strong as we watch Ben Affleck’s Batman investigate a looming enemy and recruit the different heroes. It did hurt to watch Bruce Wayne lack confidence and passion this time around. There are many scenes where he whines about his age, abilities, and overall future. I don’t know if it was the director’s purpose, but Batman was emotionally draining to watch on screen. This also goes for Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher. The character fell flat and I could have cared less about his development. I knew this was going to be a problem from the start because Cyborg is the least popular hero in the group. However, he does have the potential to be awesome, but failed as a result of over dramatic acting and writing.
Thankfully, Wonder Woman and Aquaman were perfectly written into the script. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is the DC stand out at the moment and she was front and center for this movie (in the marketing too). Gal Gadot is the perfect Amazon Warrior in my opinion. This was the first time audiences witnessed the power of Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and DC executed the introduction perfectly. Aquaman is a badass who is hopefully going to deliver an incredible solo movie this December. Audiences and I want more Aquaman!!
We also met The Flash for the first time. Ezra Miller played the speedster and attempted to bring a comedic flair to the serious franchise. Some of the jokes hit and others didn’t, but I enjoyed his screen time. Lastly, Superman and his CGI face. It’s no secret that the editors used CGI to get rid of Henry Cavil’s mustache in the movie. I couldn’t stop staring at it, but it is what it is. Superman is once again the Man of Steel who has to overcome his deathly demons to find himself on the right side of the world.
The overall story is straightforward. A Godlike Villain known as Steppenwolf comes to take over the world by collecting his “powerful boxes.” The problem with Steppenwolf was that I felt I’ve already seen this villain in Loki from the Avengers. Another problem was that his CGI was over the top. The entire movie was CGI driven. CGI is the way of Hollywood, but there were too many times I felt like I was watching a video game instead of a blockbuster movie. The look of this movie derailed me from fully immersing myself into the world. DC needs to learn a lesson from Lucasfilm on the importance of actual props and sets.
It may seem like I am bashing the movie, but I still enjoyed some of it. There were some awesome scenes that made it enjoyable to watch. I can always rally behind a strong battle sequence, but the emotional moments before the action have to be present and they weren’t. This clearly is a different kind of superhero movie, but if you like DC, you will find enjoyment during your first watch. After that, you will begin to pick the flaws and note how much the CGI brings you out of the story.
