Adrift tells the true story of Tami Oldham’s fight for survival while stuck at sea after a severe storm. A heart wrenching story of a woman trying to save her love, Richard Sharp, while stuck with limited food and water and little navigation knowledge. The film depicts both the beginning of Tami and Richard’s relationship side-by-side with their fight for survival at sea.
In telling the true story of Tami Oldham’s survival and skill in navigating herself after a hurricane at sea to Hawaii, Adrift switches from past to present and plays with the audience’s heartstrings. Tami (Shailene Woodley) and Richard (Sam Claflin) fall in love in Tahiti, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with their love. Of course, the compelling and sweet set-up only makes the rest of the film that much more heartbreaking. Watching these two amazing people fall in love only to see them go to sea and get torn apart by the storm is absolutely crushing. However, one cannot help but be completely taken aback in awe of Tami’s fight for not only her own survival, but the survival of her new fiance. The film does well with setting up the story and planting several pieces of foreshadowing that truly pay off in the most brutal way throughout the film. And, like any good film, there is a kicker of a plot-twist planted earlier through the aforementioned brilliant foreshadowing. The knowledge that Tami–and the audience’s– beloved Richard has been dead throughout Tami’s fight for survival makes her story all the more compelling at heartbreaking. Truly, I saw the film twice and there was not a dry eye in the theater either time. From compelling characters that are hard not to fall in love with to an action packed survival story, Adrift truly has it all.
