San Diego Film Festival (SDIFF) is dedicated to creating a conversation of global impact through the art of film. Besides showcasing amazing films by directors from around the world, San Diego Film Foundation and Festival also work to highlight and recognize actors and musicians who have gone above and beyond to use their impact to help others around the world.
Kenny Loggins, an award-winning artist known for great hits like “Footloose” and “Danger Zone” along with other platinum albums, received the Music Icon Award at this year’s San Diego Film Festival. Aside from his work in movie classics, Loggins was known for being the first major rock musician to switch his emphasis from rock to music for families and children. In doing so, Loggins holds the title of best-selling children’s album for the last 20 years, for his album “Return to Pooh Corner” (1994).
We had the fortune to be able to catch up with Loggins before the event to ask him a few questions.
Host: Hi Kenny, nice to finally meet you, such a huge fan. I have a microphone for you, I’m sure that’s pretty comfortable for you.”
Kenny: Yeah, I’m kinda used to it.
Host: Awesome. San Diego International Film Festival 2018 – Joining me right now is Kenny Loggins. He’s here to pick up the Music Icon Award tonight at the Nights of Stars gala. Mr. Kenny, thank you so much for being here and congratulations to you.
Kenny: Thank you.
Host:What went through your mind about this particular award and how much does this mean to you?
Kenny: This was a surprise for me, I didn’t know it was coming. And so, I’m thrilled. It’s really a great thing to be recognized for the work that you do.
Host: Being the fact that it’s in San Diego, do you have any personal San Diego connections?
Kenny: I wish I did. Just the years of coming by, coming here to work.
Host:Okay, cool! What advice do you have for those singers who are out there, who want to try to make it into the business? Now that social media and Youtube are becoming such a big platform for them.
Kenny: Oh no, it’s a completely different game now, from what it was when I started. I have a twenty-one-year-old daughter, who’s in London, recording for a distribution company, and their whole thing is all about streaming and how they’ve monetized streaming. So, it’s a whole different business.
Host: Awesome. Let’s see. Top Gun, it’s making a comeback. How excited are you about that and do you think we’ll probably hear your song again?
Kenny: I sure hope so. They haven’t made up their minds yet, but I’m lobbying anyone who wants to help can check out my website, and we can all vote on it or something.”
Host: Last question: how has your music career enriched your life professionally as a singer, and spiritually as a person?
Kenny: Oh, well, that’s a question that deserves a longer answer. But, y’know I’d like to say I got to spend my whole life singing for a living, and how lucky is that? I really love that.
