The story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) returns, with the newest iteration following the trilogy starring Tobey McGuire in the early 2000s. However with this origin story, audiences are introduced to the mysterious background that is the Parker family, with a scientific discovery and tragedy that follows Peter to the present. After the death of Uncle Ben, along with a strange spider bite, and a dash of “great power, comes great responsibility”, Peter Parker quickly follows the formula to become the second Spiderman in the Marvel movie line-up. However, this retelling begins with a twist, as Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) becomes the complicated love interest that falls for Peter. But shortly upon discovering his identity as the new web-slinging hero, their relationship is caught in a tangle as Gwen’s father (Denis Leary) hunts Spiderman down as the captain of the NYPD. However, aside from relationship problems, a new threat arises- quite literally. Dr.Curt Connors, once a scientific partner to Peter’s late father, (Rhys Ifans) comes across his greatest discovery and in turn, accidentally exposes himself to a highly dangerous and experimental mutagen. Although the experiment works to repair the limbs of a human body, it instead turns Dr.Connors into The Lizard. As his sanity deteriorates and the mutagen takes over, Peter must stop his plans from spreading the mutagen into a city wide outbreak.
As each iteration of Spiderman comes, each has its personal strengths for audiences to enjoy. Andrew Garfield nails the quirky, action-loving Spiderman while giving Peter Parker an edgy persona to balance him out. The movie is filled with action and fun, comedic quips from both Garfield and Stone, making this story of Peter Parker enjoyable for all ages.
