Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

mv5bnjuzodq5mdy5nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwotc1nzcymje@._v1_In another movie adaptation of our favorite ninja fighting team, Leo, Raph, Donnie & Mikey team up with a news reporter and her cameraman, April & Vern, to stop Shredder and the Foot Clan from taking over the world. Matters are worse when they’ve already taken over the authority in New York City, where they all reside.

This movie is a must-watch film for those who grew up loving the ninja turtles. From the goofy, cartoon-ish version of them in the 1990s trilogy, this adaptation gives a more mature vibe with the turtles look more realistic—if turtles were to be mutated with humanoid figures. Fans who look for more action-driven ninja turtles should watch this movie; it is also a great movie to introduce to those who are looking to get into the TMNT fandom with excellent character development, action scenes, and setting.

After the movie opens with a narration about evil being afoot, April and her cameraman Vernon documenting stories that do not peak April’s interest. Instead, she wishes to investigate on stories that are more resourceful; such as, the whereabouts of the Foot Clan and their plans. When she gets an intriguing answer from a man at the dock, she decides to investigate herself later that night to capture evidence with her phone. A great detail about this movie is that we see shadow figures approaching the Foot Clan right before they kick their butts, much like the original movies where we were teased of the turtles’ silhouettes after their grand reveal.

Another great change the writers made with the story is the fact that April’s late father worked for the company that mutated Splinter and the turtles. When she runs home to open a box of her final memories with her father, she encounters pictures that contained a symbol that she found that night. We then learn from Splinter that April’s father worked with Eric Sacks, (SPOILER ALERT) who works for Shredder, and wanted no part of their evil plot, so he set the company building on fire to destroy their plans but sacrificed his life in exchange. April, who was in the building that tragic day, saved Splinter and the turtles right after they were injected with the mutagen and carried them to a sewer on the curb. It is interesting to see alternative versions of characters and their backgrounds. In this case, April was closer to Splinter and the turtles than we all thought.

This movie is different than other versions of the turtles, and that is good. It is a breath of fresh air to see how the turtles would look if they were more realistic and if there was a stronger connection between the characters than we thought. With heavier action scenes (plus a great finale fight) and recognizable personalities from the turtles, this movie makes for must-watch movie for all fans of action & ninja turtles.
