X-Men 2

41e154cbe91f850fdc7d836fef8f9c8aThe X-Men must team up with Magneto and his Brotherhood to fight against and anti-mutant special ops group dedicated to discover the means to mutant extinction.

X-Men 2, directed by Bryan Singer, takes place not so long after the events of the first X-Men film. However, unlike the first film, which focuses on the struggles of mutants, the audience is shown just how far the human side is willing to go when acting upon the same fear and anger as the mutants. One can imagine just how much worse a person’s day can get after an extremist group claiming to represent your people tries to destroy everyone else. Just to walk outside one would probably need to have a PHD in using a disguise kit. Unless you can change into anyone like Mystique or your mutation doesn’t appear aesthetically.

The film begins with Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), a teleporting mutant, attempting an assassination on President McKenna (Cotter Smith) with a knife that has a ribbon stating ‘Mutant Freedom Now’. After getting grazed with a bullet Nightcrawler panics and disappears leaving the knife behind. This sparks a great amount of fear for the President and for the human community. The audience is then introduced to Colonel William Stryker (Brian Cox), a man who views mutation as a diseases and obsesses in creating ways to combat mutants. In addition to his pursuit for mutant extinction, we are shown just how cunning and creative he can be as he finds ways to use to mutant abilities against other mutants. Though the assassination is stopped, Stryker quickly and easily capitalizes on the situation by convincing President McKenna to authorize Stryker to conduct special operations to handle the mutant threat. All the while we see Stryker carrying out his plans as he easily manipulates and interrogates the imprisoned Magneto (Ian McKellen) via a special serum to obtain information on the Xavier School for the Gifted.

Meanwhile, Logan (Hugh Jackman) returns to the school to consult with Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) about the clues he has about his past while Rogue (Anna Paquin) and Bobby Drake (Shawn Ashmore) explore the sophisticated and possibly deadly world mutant romance. One can imagine just how much more complicated it can get for a teenager dealing with the possibility of hurting his or her significant other on top of getting acne right before the school dance. After pleasantries are exchanged upon Logan’s return Stryker attacks the school and begins to abduct what mutant children he can for his experiments. As Logan protects the school and the children he comes face to face with his past.

The film displays an interesting perspective on the opposite side of the mutant versus human concept. While mutants feel discriminated and hated, humans are frightened and angry at the prospect that a single mutant can easily overwhelm them which becomes evident in Stryker’s character. Despite certain nitpicky things like Rogue still playing a helpless teenage girl, Nightcrawler having a stereotypical German accent, or Colossus not being Russian the story presented in the film is quite entertaining and gets 7 out 10 from me.

My name is Eddieson. I’m an open minded dreamer that likes to look for new opportunities, experiences, and challenges in life to make things a bit more interesting. After graduating from San Diego State University with a Japanese degree and minor in Business,  I landed an office job in Shinjuku, Japan where I dealt with online marketing matters as well as content creation. Though I come from an international business background I could never escape the alluring call of an emotionally manipulating story, regardless of the medium, that could turn the toughest body builder into a two year old child watching The Muppets and eating “pig newtons”. So long as the story is well done it doesn’t matter to me whether it’s presented as a comic, video game, anime, book, movie, or even an interpretive dance with bananas and jello. After some intense independent study I have not only been more than inspired to join the industry, but brought to a point where I wonder why I gave up pursuing this stuff in college and turned to a course of pulling my hair out before each exam. Regardless, I love stories and hope to be presented with the opportunity to tell my own; most likely through writing. With a fire in my heart and goals set I am actively gaining skills each day to hopefully one day help others in their endeavors as well as achieve my own dreams. |Instagram @BlaEddieBlaView My Articles
