A struggling teenage girl on the cusp of her eighteenth birthday gets the biggest surprise of her life when discovers a beaten and broken down Bumblebee at a junk shop. Over the years, the Transformers films, with the aid of Michael Bay of course, failed to develop a decent or sophisticated story line and mainly focused on how flashy it could get in destroying their surroundings. By the third film in the franchise I couldn’t help but wonder just how the government doesn’t go bankrupt in financing the needed repairs. Regardless, I’m happy to say that Bumblebee, directed by Travis Knight, stands out as one of the better films in the Transformers franchise. It was definitely apparent that more effort was put into character development instead being overwhelmed by explosions and wreckage every few minutes. The story itself was structured well and from the very beginning of the film it was easy to understand and follow everything. Clear cut goals, established stakes for the heroes, and obstacles that needed to be overcome so that the main characters don’t get popped like zits. You’ll understand that last bit when you see the movie.
The film begins with a bit of backstory on how and why Bumblebee ends up on Earth. Bumblebee (Dylan O’Brien) is fighting in a war alongside his fellow Autobots on Cybertron before they are outnumbered and overrun by the Decepticons. It is at that point when Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) gives him the order to go to a well hidden planet called Earth that apparently isn’t so hidden or unknown as the villains in the movie instantly recognize it as Earth when they see it. Regardless, Bumblebee follows orders and leaves to establish a safe haven for the Autobots. Upon his escape, he crash lands in a forest interrupting a government training exercise lead by Agent Burns (John Cena). As the military chases him down, they are interrupted by a Decepticon which leaves Bumblebee near fatally wounded.
Fast forward a few years and we follow the main heroine of the story Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld), a troubled tomboy with a deep love for mechanics. We get a sense of how miserable she is as she is still not over the death of her father, she argues with her mother on a constant basis, and continues to work a mediocre job at Hot Dog on a Stick. Not to mention she is bullied by the popular girls. After work, she goes to a junk shop where she actively collects parts to repair a broken down car. While searching for parts, she hits the jackpot as she finds a broken and worn down Bumblebee.
The main character goes through some teenage drama that many can definitely relate to and the sweet comforting moments between her and Bumblebee definitely manage to tug at your heart strings. The biggest factor of the film that made it enjoyable was the well implemented humor that managed to tickle my laugh organs every now and then. Well familiar awkward moments that define one’s teenage years along the main character’s attempts to keep Bumblebee a secret definitely add a light hearted element that is bound to at least put a smile on one’s face. Granted, there were a few moments that felt cheesy due to over dramatic one liners, but at the very least they weren’t all throughout the film. Overall, I rate the film a 7 out of 10.
