The Reign of The Supermen (Movie Review) By Caroline B.

5qvl3wkd9uq11The Reign of The Supermen premiered on the Paley Center on January 11, 2019. The film follows The Death of Superman and brings in many new characters, some whom claim to be Superman’s next successor. The film starts us off with the aftermath of losing Superman (Jerry O’Connell). We see a broken-hearted Lois Lane (Rebecca Romijn) searching for answers and making friends with Diana/Wonder Woman (Rosario Dawson). It’s definitely one of the coolest moments in the film, since both Lois and Diana are strong and powerful characters who seems to agree on not being sentimental or being able to have girlfriends. Everyone in Metropolis struggles with the arrival of four mysterious beings who have decided to protect Metropolis and wear Superman’s logo on their chest. There’s the quirky and superstar Superboy (Cameron Monaghan), the Eradicator (Charles Halford), who kills bad guys no matter what, Steel Superman (Cress Williams), and Cyborg Superman (Jerry O’Connell), who seems to know just a bit more than others.

Lois questions whether any of the Supermen could be the real one but Martha Kent, Clark’s mom (Jennifer Hale), tells her, “I would know.” There’s a possibility Cyborg Superman is Clark Kent when he has a heart to heart moment with Lois. He seems to have a connection with her and care about her enough to pay her a visit, but it’s just a little convenient that he doesn’t remember his past, the writers definitely keep the audience guessing, doubting, believing and thinking.

The one character who almost, and I mean almost, does a complete 180 turn is Lex Luthor (Rainn Wilson). First, he hides the fact that Superboy is a clone he created with Superman’s DNA and his own! He does whatever it takes to make Superboy the new Superman, but things don’t work out, and when he’s about to eliminate Superboy, he doesn’t! Could he, possibly, have actual feelings? He does something bizarre towards the end of the film that surprises the Justice League. The storyline just keeps getting better when Cyborg Superman starts getting flashbacks of being Hank Henshaw (Patrick Fabian). Turns out Darkseid (Tony Todd), not only saved him when Doomsday destroyed his ship, in The Death of Superman, but he modified his body completely, and is controlling him to do his bidding. Hank wants revenge on Superman because he blames him for the loss of his wife. Since Superman is nowhere to be found, Lois becomes his target.

The Justice League: The Flash (Christopher Gorham), Cyborg (Shemar Moore), The Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Batman (Jason O’Mara), Martian Manhunter (Nyambi Nyambi) and Wonder Woman, all have to deal with new kids on the block and the Green Lantern adds his own humor at times. They all judge Superboy, who enjoys the spotlight. But hey, it’s not his fault, he has Luthor’s DNA! There’re tons of heavy fights with the Supermen, who all want to be the only successor. Then we discover the Eradicator is hiding the real, for sure this time, Superman while he recovers and is able to go back home, he’s not quite himself yet.

Meanwhile Darkseid prepares to enter Metropolis with the help of Cyborg Superman. The Justice League are taken out, literally, of Earth’s dimension and become the ones who need help for a change, in order to save Metropolis and aid Superman.

Things become a little twisted, with cyborg soldiers, Lex Luthor trying to help, and the possible end of Metropolis, which gives the audience a look into what could happen to the world should Superman never return. There’s definitely a lot of darkness in this film.

The Reign of The Supermen is filled with intense and well-designed action sequences that never let the audience look away from the screen. There’s surprise after surprise. A heart wrenching reunion, lots of comedy and a couple of character arcs that will positively satisfy the viewer. 8/10
