The Paley Center in Beverly Hills premiered had an exclusive screening of Reign of The Supermen on January 10th. The film follows the Death of Superman. It will also be in theaters January 13-14 and out on DVD/Bluray by January 29th. Before the showing we spoke to Toks Olagundoye who voices Cat Grant. Toks Olagundoye is a writer, producer and actress. She is mostly recognized for her role as Hayley Shipton in Castle (2015-2016) and Jackie Joyner-Kersee in the ABC sitcom The Neighboors. Toks made her debut into the film and TV industry in 2002 and has guest starred in Ugly Betty, NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Law & Order, Switched at Birth, CSI: NY and Prime Suspect.
Toks Olagundoye had a lot to say about her character Cat Grant. She never realized how big Reign of The Superman would be and she was a little nervous when she figured it out. Of course, she did an amazing job! Toks considers her character to represent truth and integrity. She brought Cat Grant to life without doing much research because she didn’t want to mistakenly copy, and she did a marvelous job giving Cat Grant her own personal flare. She believes Cat to be a lovable but misunderstood character. She knows that Superman would be welcome in our current society if such a thing could happen. And if she could, she would also give it a try at all the different voices she could in the DC world. There’s no doubt that Toks Olagundoye has what it takes to accomplish anything she sets her mind to.
Host: How are you doing my dear?
Toks Olagundoye: I’m really good. How are you?
Host: I’m doing good. I’m so excited to see you. I mean Cat Grant is actually one of my favorite characters!
Toks Olagundoye: Oh, really?
Host: I mean this girl is really bad ass!
Toks Olagundoye: She is.
Host: She’s a badass, I like her. So, how does it feel to be a part of this franchise?
Toks Olagundoye: Oh, amazing, I feel very lucky. Yeah. Um, I didn’t realize what a big deal it was going to be when I got the role, because you know I get a role and then I kind of found out who is in it and I was like, “Oh gosh, I hope I didn’t mess this up!”
(Laughter)
Host: What kind of person do you think Cat Grant is? I mean she’s kind of a misunderstood character but very lovable at the same time.
Toks Olagundoye: I don’t know a lot about her from the other portrayals of her, so my answer is simply from what I know of her from this. I think that Cat has a lot of integrity and I think that is something that is incredibly important to her, to simply be true to what is important to her and I think that what is important to her is honesty and truth and finding out what’s really going on and you see a lot of that in this one.
Host: Yup.
Toks Olagundoye: Yeah.
Host: That’s really well said, I like that. Ok, so Superman represents hope and justice. What do you think Cat Grant represents?
Toks Olagundoye: Again, integrity and truth. I really do.
Host: Yeah. What do you expect- is there anything original from the comic books or did you kind of use your own flare?
Toks Olagundoye: Yeah, this was all just me because I don’t really know anything about her from before and I tend not- I done a lot of roles that have been done before, I’ve done a lot of shows where I’m coming in to something that already exists and I tend to not do any of the research, you know what I’m saying-
Host: Yeah! It’s all kind of like yeah-
Toks Olagundoye: I don’t what to mistakenly copy, you know.
Host: Yeah.
Toks: I want it to be my own.
Host: And Cat Grant is one of those safe ones because you know, there’s not that many in portrayal. Other than you know-
Toks Olagundoye: Right. Well, except the woman who portrays her.
Host: Supergirl
Toks Olagundoye: Kind of a big deal.
Host: So, if Superman existed today. Given the climate that we’re in 2019. Do you think he would be as welcoming versus how he was in the 80s and 90s?
Toks Olagundoye: As welcome?
Host: Yeah.
Toks Olagundoye: If he like, appeared on earth right now?
Host: Yeah. Right now. Like just dropped.
Toks Olagundoye: Oh, yeah!
Host: Ok.
Toks Olagundoye: Oh my God, yeah!
Host: Right.
Toks Olagundoye: But here’s a question-
Host: Yeah.
Toks Olagundoye: Would he be into it? Because the way the world is now, he’d need a social media account.
Host: Wow.
Toks Olagundoye: He’d need like you know, because he’d be a big deal
Host: That’s true.
Toks Olagundoye: And the thing about Superman is that he likes to do what he can to help people.
Host: That’s true.
Toks Olagundoye: And then disappear into the shadows, right?
Host: Yeah, I didn’t even think of it that way, that’s a good point.
Toks Olagundoye: So, I think we’d love to have him here, but would he enjoy it?
Host: I totally forgot about the whole social media thing. That was the only thing that was different from 20 years ago.
(Laughs)
Host: Are there any other voices that you would love to do in the DC world?
Toks Olagundoye: All of them.
Host: Yeah. I figured.
Toks Olagundoye: I wanna do all of them.
Host: Just do it.
Toks Olagundoye: I mean, I do three in his film.
Host: Yeah.
Toks Olagundoye: That’s not enough guys!
(Laughter)
Host: You’re so funny! Well, Tolks, thank you so much for joining us. Congratulations and your future full of success.
Toks Olagundoye: Thank you!
Host: Be sure to catch The Reign of The Supermen that’s hitting theaters this weekend and this month. And thank you so much! Cheers!
Toks Olagundoye: Cheers!
