Krypton | S1 Review by Eddie Burkhalter

MV5BMTkxNDM1NzkyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjg2MzU4NDM@._V1_An ancient and highly intelligent being seeks to add Krypton to his collection of worlds. The young Seg El, grandfather of Superman, must find a way to prevent the destruction of his world as well as the defeat of this alien being.

Krypton follows the story of Seg El (Cameron Cuffe), grandfather to Superman, and the trials and tribulations that he must overcome in order to prevent the destruction of his planet. The story begins when Seg is visited by a human named Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) from the future. In particular Earth’s future. Adam arrives to warn Seg of Krypton’s impending doom and to ensure that Superman still comes into existence within his own timeline. Like any sane person, Seg refuses to believe that Adam is telling the truth until he sees the guy disappear in front of his eyes. This, of course, causes Seg to start doubting his doubts.

Afterwards, the ultimate bomb gets dropped onto Seg as his mother reveals that his beloved grandfather has a secret lair and was killed by the governing council due to the discovery of a being that is on its way to destroy Krypton. From there the council manages to discover what Seg and his family are up to and seek to prevent them from taking any further actions. After they are caught they then attend a hearing where they are deemed as traitors and killed on site after claiming allegiance to a terrorist faction. Seg must now deal with the ultimate task of gathering people, including the ones that killed his parents, to join his cause in saving Krypton from the deadly force that is Brainiac.

Overall, I rate the show a flat 7 out of 10. While the show is not entirely bad there are elements to it that feel hastily added. In addition, the twists that are presented throughout the episodes contain little to no shock value; which is usually the point of a twist. Instead, the twists that are revealed feel more as a convenient solution to one character’s troubles rather than provide a shock factor that adds depth to the story.

Throughout the show, Jayna Zod (Ann Ogbomo) has been portrayed as a warrior that prizes honor and duty over everything; including family. When her daughter, Lyta Zod (Georgina Campbell), is falsely accused for treason and is about to be executed Jayna makes the hardest decision she could which was sacrifice her honor for the life of her child.

We are shown glimpses of how powerful Brainiac is as we are shown glimpses of his ship from time to time. Within his ship, we see multiple cities that are encased within an energized bubble and displayed as trophies.

The difference in power is made abundantly clear as Brainiac shows just how easily he can manipulate people as well as out power them when he takes the throne of the governing head with ease.

Adam saving Seg towards the end of the season is definitely an iconic moment in the show because it shows that there is more to Adam than he lets on and just how maniacal Brainiac can be.

Creative Direction:

The end of the season leaves a captivating cliff hanger as the past is re-written to replace Superman with General Zod. Or at least some version of a super Zod as Superman’s cloak is replaced with a Zod’s symbol. Furthermore, we get a glimpse of Doomsday awake in his prison after cryogenic sleep and attempting to escape. While many have seen what happens when Doomsday confronts Superman at his peak, one cannot deny the curiosity in seeing what Doomsday will do to Krypton where the presence of any Superman is lacking.

Character Development:

By far the most interesting development is the one that happens between the characters Jayna Zod (Ann Ogbomo) and Lyta Zod (Georgina Campbell) as they undergo major changes both externally and internally. Jayna must fight against every instinct she has as a warrior to be a good mother. All the while, Lyta develops a resentment toward her mother. This in turn creates conflict as Jayna does her best to right her wrongs while Lyta begins to become more active in rebelling against her mother.

Seg barely changes at all.

Nyssa changes drastically.

My name is Eddieson. I’m an open minded dreamer that likes to look for new opportunities, experiences, and challenges in life to make things a bit more interesting. After graduating from San Diego State University with a Japanese degree and minor in Business,  I landed an office job in Shinjuku, Japan where I dealt with online marketing matters as well as content creation. Though I come from an international business background I could never escape the alluring call of an emotionally manipulating story, regardless of the medium, that could turn the toughest body builder into a two year old child watching The Muppets and eating “pig newtons”. So long as the story is well done it doesn’t matter to me whether it’s presented as a comic, video game, anime, book, movie, or even an interpretive dance with bananas and jello. After some intense independent study I have not only been more than inspired to join the industry, but brought to a point where I wonder why I gave up pursuing this stuff in college and turned to a course of pulling my hair out before each exam. Regardless, I love stories and hope to be presented with the opportunity to tell my own; most likely through writing. With a fire in my heart and goals set I am actively gaining skills each day to hopefully one day help others in their endeavors as well as achieve my own dreams. |Instagram @BlaEddieBlaView My Blogs
