It was a chilly night standing in line with all the excited children and their families; they could not stand still they were so wired. Their faces were bright and full of smiles as they asked their parents when it was time to go inside. They grew even more excited when the doors finally opened and the people began taking our tickets. As soon as you walked in you could hear the squeaking of the team’s sneakers on the wooden floor. Coke and hot dog in hand we walked into the arena ready to see the show. Now this was my first time attending a Harlem Globetrotters game, so I had no idea what to expect but I was eager to see what the hype was all about.
While everyone began taking their seats a video displayed on the big screen and the words Gonoodle popped up with a catchy beat in the background with the chant, “Harlem Globetrotters, drop it like it’s hot. Harlem Globetrotters, show us what you got.” That video was a great opener for the show because all the kids were up and dancing to the beat and even the parents were clapping along and singing to the song. My roommate is a perfect example, she was so fixed on the video that she was dancing in her seat with joy; she looked like she was enjoying this little moment of being a kid again. After the video finished playing the energy in the arena was very high and a booming voice came over the speakers and that is when we met our MC, DJ Deaf from Louisiana! He led a few games that involved some audience members of all ages, this was fun to watch because you can see that the Harlem Globetrotters helps you step out of your comfort zone and just have fun. The first game was musical chairs against Globie (team mascot), the second game was a dance off, the third game was a shootout between two contestants. Everyone was a winner for every game and I really appreciated that because you don’t want young children to feel like they didn’t accomplish anything in front of a huge crowd like that.
Then we were introduced to the opponents that have been struggling to defeat the Harlem Globetrotters for years, but this year they have a secret weapon. Cager! A masked player that is 7’7 that is hellbent on destroying not only the Harlem Globetrotters but the fans love for them too. After his speech of how he plans to defeat the team he shows his strength by deflating the ball with his bare hands. The arena bursted into loud BOOS from the children and the lights dimmed low while the music changed for the heroes to step on the floor. The team rushed the floor in their red, white, and blue uniforms taking up as much space as they could; clapping their hands to the beat, their faces filled with smiles while they faced the crowd. They all lined up in a straight line as the announcer introduced each player to the crowd, each individual had their own song and dance to stand out. All except for Ant (#12), who was so upset that he ran into the crowd and stated that he was not going to play. You could tell right there and then that he was the funny one. After some convincing from the other players he was game ready and he continued to run around the court to show his excitement. Globie returned to the floor with a Harlem Globetrotters flag to signal that the game was going to begin.
The Generals won the tip off and Cager was able to show that he was the secret weapon for a reason by opening the game with a huge slam dunk! But the Harlem Globetrotters were not affected by his intense dunk, they came back and returned with their own dunk with ease. Throughout the first half you can hear the player, Ant, talking on the floor and making sounds in his wireless mic. This is all part of the show in order to keep the kids locked in on the game instead of being distracted with anything else around them. At one point during the game Ant makes a ridiculous moves that results in an obvious travel and the referee is forced to blow his whistle and make the call. In a comedic fashion Ant argues with the referee and tricks him into changing his call and counting the lay up. There is also a point in the game where the Harlem Globetrotters sneak a little girl on the court and she is able to score a basket for the team. The referee stops the game and questions who the little girl is, they then state that the female player of the team, TNT (#18) wanted to show the little girl the meaning of Girl Power and then gave her an autographed basketball. I really enjoyed this portion of the show because the way her face lit up showed the whole point of why the players do what they do. They play to bring joy to all of the children and show them that they are capable of doing anything as long as they put their mind to it and work for it.
Throughout the entire game the Harlem Globetrotters would include people from the stands and have them help add points against the Generals. This game overall was very entertaining to watch and feeling the intensity from the children in the stands made this experience so much fun for my roommate and I. The best part for me I would have to say was when Cager rushed the announcer booth and ruined the score board and stated that the first to six would win. Then the players told the crowd that if they believe that they can win then the will do so, the energy in the arena shifted and you can feel how badly the kids wanted the team to win. It was a very intense minute with the teams scoring back and forth, when the Harlem Globetrotters were on defense you could hear the little voices chanting, “DEFENSE, DEFENSE!” and that allowed the player Moose (#45) to pin the ball against the backboard and end the game with a slam dunk to win! The Harlem Globetrotters is a fun team to watch, not only with their skills on the floor but each players’ personality. If you want to take your child or younger sibling or even your niece or nephew, I say this is a show worth taking them to. The team promotes girl power, teamwork, and faith in their show all in one and I believe that those are great things to teach children.
