Dazzling special effects, beautiful costumes, and memorable songs definitely take you to a whole new world. The Aladdin Broadway Musical Show in San Diego did not disappoint. The production is based off of the Disney movie and features songs like ‘A Whole New World’ and ‘Friend Like Me’. In addition to the classic jingles, there were new songs that didn’t make it into the original movie or were written for the show by Alan Menken.
My favorite new ballad that was sang in the show was ‘Proud of Your Boy’ which is about Aladdin reflecting on the choices he’s made to try and make his mother proud. It was sung by Adam Jacobs who was the original actor that portrayed Aladdin back in NYC’s Broadway stage.
Aside from the songs, the cast did a wonderful job with the high energy choreography in every musical number. One of the most elaborate numbers was Friend Like Me. It seemed as though the ensemble went through various costumes changes throughout the song and each prop made the Genie’s magic come to life.
You even felt a part of fantasy land of Agrabah with moments that broke the fourth wall. This was mostly done by the character of the Genie, who made pop culture jokes and references and interacted with the audience.
Though Jasmine didn’t have her pet tiger Raja, and Aladdin didn’t have Abu, these characters were replaced by new ones. Jasmine now has a court of girls that she goes to for advice. Aladdin is part of a band of thieves that also act as his loyal companions in times of trouble. No one seemed to mind these changes and fell in love with the quirkiness of the new additions.
Overall, it’s about as colorful and fun as you would hope a Disney musical to be. If you are a fan of Aladdin or are even new to musicals, you will have a good time with this one.
