Captain Marvel by Krista B.

0Girl power! Captain Marvel is that beacon of hope that the young girls of our society have been dying for. Sure Marvel Studios has had other female heroes like Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and the Wasp; but Captain Marvel is a different breed and I see why Fury paged her at the end of Infinity War. I enjoyed watching this film a lot and I loved that it tied the loose ends that the other films had and answered a lot of the questions that people have been asking. It is your typical Marvel film that is filled with laughs, action, family, and a big coming into your own moment. We also get the opportunity to see characters that have died like Ronin (Lee Pace), Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) again!

Vers (Brie Larson), is a Kree warrior/hero; their mission is to destroy the Skrulls who infest and destroy all planets in the universe. Vers, on the other hand, is different compared to her Kree companions, she has these visions that feel like memories but she isn’t entirely sure. The Skrulls can tamper with your mind and alter your memories so the Kree warn her from looking too deep into them. You can see throughout the film that she is conflicted with this but her goal is to fight the creatures that destroyed her home planet.

Crash landing on Planet C-53, aka Earth, more and more of Vers visions flood her brain and the conflict within builds. There are Skrulls on the planet that she has to find before they locate a scientist (Annette Bening) with the secret weapon to help them take over the universe. That is where she meets Nicholas Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), a younger desk worker for S.H.I.E.L.D. unaware of the alien threat. His world is rocked when he comes face to face with a Skrull and he isn’t sure if he can trust Vers; pager in hand, similar to the one used in Infinity War, and ready to call for backup he joins forces with the Kree warrior. While this is all going down Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), Vers’ mentor and their team is looking traveling through space searching for her.

The overall theme of the film is overcoming the obstacles in your life. No matter how many times you get knocked down you have to get back up and show everyone that you are not giving up. That drive and determination to come back fighting stronger than ever are what makes us human. Vers in the film has a big obstacle that she has to overcome in order to be the hero that she has been training to become for years. It is not just the powers that she has that makes her a threat for Thanos, it is her determination and ability to not give up that makes her so dangerous. This was a great film to show how Captain Marvel is the hero we need in order to fight back and avenge not just Earth but the universe.

Hi! My name is Krista Buligon and I am a Senior at San Diego Christian College. I am a student-athlete majoring in Communication with an emphasis in the Film and Media. I have always had a strong interest in all types of movies because they take me to another world. But my favorite places to go to are New York with a crazy spider kid saving the day, Gotham with a vigilante dressed as a bat fighting a penguin or joker, the wizarding world of Hogwarts with a kid with a scar on his head fighting “He Who Shall Be Named”, or a galaxy far far away with jedi knights battling sith lords with colorful lightsabers. My friends always laugh and call me a super nerd for loving any forms of science fiction but those movies shape me into who I am today. When I am not on the basketball court or working at In N Out Burger I am either on my couch watching movies or writing for fun. I hope that after I graduate I can turn my writing hobby into a career and impact others the way movies have always impacted me. Instagram: @PrincessKrista11 | View My Project
