The Del Mar Fair is a sign summer has arrived in San Diego as it brings fun festivities each year to the Del Mar fairgrounds from early June to early July. People come to enjoy the rides, food, shopping, concerts, creative performances and special exhibits. This year’s theme is especially magical as it is centered around the Wizard of Oz. The Del Mar Fair’s website explained that this year’s theme will definitely ensure an “Oz-some” time and I definitely agree! I thought that the special Wizard of Oz exhibit, the art showcase and the rides were especially great this year.
Exhibit: This year there is a special Wizard of Oz exhibit held in the Theme Exhibit building in the fairgrounds. This exhibit is open to anyone attending the fair and is free of charge. After walking into the building, the music and lighting immediately transported me to the land of Oz. There are also a few different interactive themed backdrops that allow you to take some fun photos. What is especially unique is the section in the exhibit that displays the history relating to the Wizard of Oz books. Here you can learn about the author, illustrators and some other interesting facts. I learned that the author, Lyman Frank Baum, was also the designer of the four crown shaped chandeliers that still hang in the Hotel Del Coronado Crown Room today! The exhibit also features a show stage for performances, a bar, a display case with some of Lyman Frank Baum’s original works as well as a display featuring some artifacts from the set of the MGM 1939 Wizard of Oz Film.
Art: The fair also features an art section that is worth checking out. The fine art section and student showcase both display very impressive works of art. It was fun to see the quality creations in the fine art section, but also being able to see the wide variety of beautiful art works in the student showcase was also great.
Rides: It wouldn’t be the fair without the rides! While there are many thrilling rides to choose from, there are a few I would recommend. First, it is definitely worth taking a ride on the Ferris Wheel called ‘The Big Wheel’ as it able to give riders a beautiful bird’s-eye view of the fairgrounds, Del Mar Beach and other surrounding areas such as the San Dieguito River Valley. Now if you like roller coasters and spinning around a little, I would suggest going on the ‘Crazy Mouse’. This ride had been at the fair many years and I remember loving this ride a little kid. Finally, it seems that one of the longest lines I saw was for the popular ride the ‘Mega Drop’. This ride drops you 120 feet which is definitely a thrilling ride.
The last day of the fair is Thursday, July 4th but it is ending with a big finale celebration for the 4th of July holiday. If you don’t have plans set for July 4th yet, you might consider spending it at the fair! The park will be open until midnight and there will be special celebrations throughout the day as well as a special firework show starting at 9pm.
The Del Mar Fair is is a symbol of summertime and has been bringing fun festivities to San Diego since 1880. Whether you go for the food, the rides, the shopping, the art, exhibits or performances, you are sure to find something to enjoy!
