Us (Movie Review) by Arleen R.

MV5BZTliNWJhM2YtNDc1MC00YTk1LWE2MGYtZmE4M2Y5ODdlNzQzXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMzY0MTE3NzU@._V1_In the past, I never liked horror movies. I am not a huge fan of peering at the screen from behind the covers and then jumping as soon as the gory scenes flesh out, witnessing the characters make terrible decisions in dangerous situations, and replaying the scary movie in my head as I am about to go to sleep. However, I am always willing to make the exception for Jordan Peele.

The Wilsons appear as your typical American family: summer has arrived, and Gabe and Adelaide Wilson (portrayed by Winston Duke and Academy-award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o respectively) take their kids, Zora and Jason (respectively played by Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex), to their Santa Monica beach house in order to spend more time together as a unit. However, Adelaide’s anxiety starts rising as she recollects her vivid yet terrifying experiences of meeting her doppelgänger in the depths of the boardwalk’s funhouse; for each additional minute she spends there, her memory and fear of the doppelgänger increasingly haunts her. Her worst nightmares come true the night Jason tells her that he sees a family standing in their driveway. To their horror, the family the Wilsons have confronted happen to be their doppelgängers, in which each member happens to show up with malicious intentions and a pair of golden scissors.

Just like Jordan Peele’s Get Out, there are many factors that can be accounted toward the success of his sophomore film, in which a stellar and phenomenal cast is a part of that. Every cast member was responsible for playing two versions of their character – the “normal” version and the evil “Tethered”. While everyone does a great job of exemplifying their character’s duality, Nyong’o’s performance stood out the most. It was difficult to remind myself that Adelaide and Red (Adelaide’s Tethered version) were played by the same actress, as the characters were extremely different from one another. Others (and I) believe that she will be a great contender towards an Academy Award for Best Actress; she is that amazing. Additionally, spectators will be drawn to the film’s compelling storyline, which is heavily complemented by the score and visual symbolism. Every camera shot, every physical movement, every aspect of a character’s identity, essentially everything about the film – multiple factors have a purpose in forwarding Peele’s intended message, in which he wants his audience to realize, by watching the Wilson family fight against the Tethered version of themselves and learn of the bigger chaos they happen to be a part of, that the worst enemy we may ever face in our entire lifetimes will always be ourselves.
