The 9th film from Quentin Tarantino
A faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.
Director Quentin Tarantino delivers his love letter to the city of angels once again. He visits a timeline that he wishes would have happened.
“Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” takes place in 1969 as Los Angeles is shifting in movies. Leonardo DiCaprio plays TV star Rick Dalton, a struggling actor specializing in westerns. Brad Pitt plays Dalton’s best friend and Hollywood stuntman Cliff Booth. They both try to survive in a constantly changing movie industry. Dalton is the neighbor of the young and promising actress and model Sharon Tate, who is played by Margot Robbie. There is evil lurking in the background as the Manson family are out and about looking for trouble.
As a movie fan and Tarantino fan, you watch the movie for the dialogue and end up staying for the acting performances.
Everyone in the movie is great but the standout is Pitt. He is just so damn cool; I want to grow up and be like him. Tarantino slowly builds him up throughout the movie and then he explodes at the climax. Pitt and Tarantino make a great pair just like they did in “Inglourious Basterds”. Pitt won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor beating out the likes of Joe Pesci, Tom Hanks, and Al Pacino. Whenever Pitt interacts with the Manson family throughout the movie, it is gold.
Can we agree that DiCaprio is great in every role he plays? DiCaprio would have won Best Actor as the academy awards if it wasn’t for one of the best performances of the decade, Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. DiCaprio is hilarious in the movie, yet you can feel his pain knowing his career is winding down. There is a scene when he is in his acting trailer, where he beats himself up and cusses himself out because he forgot his line. It is a very relatable scene for anyone. He then goes back out and delivers a great scene and is rewarded by his young child coworker and gives a smile worth a thousand words.
Robbie gives an angelic performance of the late Sharon Tate. She doesn’t have much screen time which makes her performance even more special. I wish she had more to do but Tarantino’s motive was to show how much of a special talent she was and how she was stolen from the world.
“Once Upon A Time in… Hollywood” is beautifully shot and the sets are really well done. It feels like Los Angeles in the late 60s. The soundtrack isn’t one of Tarantino’s best, but it is still memorable. The movie is almost three hours long, but it doesn’t feel like it. I could have stayed in the movie’s world for another five hours.
