Knives Out (MOVIE REVIEW) by Kevin C.

Screen Shot 2020-07-15 at 3.16.39 PMKnives Out is centered around the wealthy Thrombley family. The entire family gathers at 85-year-old author Harlan Thrombley’s house for his birthday and the following morning Harlan is found with his throat slit and a knife in his hand. But this may be more than a simple suicide. Acclaimed private investigator, Benoit Blanc receives an envelope of cash to look further into Harlan’s death. Suspects include Harlan’s daughter-in-law Joni, Harlan’s son Walt, Harlan’s daughter Linda, her husband Richard and their son Ransolm. And of course, Harlan’s nurse, Marta. The story follows Marta as she deals with the pressure of the murder investigation, hiding her full knowledge of Harlan’s death. The movie is full of twists and turns as Blanc inches closer and closer to the truth as Marta desperately tries to keep her secrets.

Writer and director, Rian Johnson follows up Star Wars: The Last Jedi with a murder mystery that revitalizes the entire genre. Knives Out is a thrilling ride full of laughs that keeps the audience guessing at every turn. Knives Out is an expertly written film that shows the audience Harlan’s death early in the movie, which disarms the audience and stops them from trying to guess any big reveal at end. Rian Johnson doesn’t waste a single scene in the movie and the ensemble cast shines throughout the movie. Amazing actors, including Ana De Armas, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collete, Don Johnson, Christopher Plummer and Lakeith Stanfield, work so well together and its easy to see how much fun they had making the movie. Apart from being a fun and entertaining movie, Knives Out also juggles complex and difficult ideas without beating the audience over the head with symbolism and themes. Issues like immigration and racism are touched on throughout the movie. The privilege of the white and wealthy Thrombley family is evident as they almost all serve a role as greedy antagonists opposed to the good-natured Marta.

Knives Out is a thrilling murder mystery that keeps the audience engaged and laughing for two hours while also bringing a lot of heart and deep themes to think about. Rian Johnson’s writing and directing seem to grow exponentially stronger with every movie he makes. Everyone who hasn’t seen Knives Out yet should absolutely put it at the top of their watchlist.
