What makes the new age Jumanji films so good is the imaginative modern twist that writers put on the classic Jumanji film starring Robin Williams. Like the first new age Jumanji, Jumanji: The Next Level offers family fun humor, impressive character growth, and multiple tremendous female leads. But this sequel has something that makes it stand out from the other: Danny DeVito.
This movie is set three years after Spencer, Fridge, Martha, and Bethany last escaped from Jumanji. They are all returning home from college for break and will be reuniting after months of barely talking. Spencer is more than apprehensive because he feels his life has become very stagnant and he doesn’t want his friends and ex-girlfriend Martha to see what he has become. To make matters worse, Spencer will have to share his room with his grandfather, Milo, who has been staying at his house due to health related issues.
In order to change the pattern of his boring life, Spencer decides to plug in the old Jumanji game and become his alter ego, Dr. Bravestone, once again. His friends become suspicious when he does not answer their texts and find out that he has returned to the game alone. While trying to figure out what to do, Milo’s ex best friend Eddie unexpectedly knocks on the door and attempts to apologize to Milo for betraying him in the past. In the mix of all the chaos, the crew decides to rescue Spencer from the game, but Milo and Eddie are sucked into the game instead of Bethany, taking on the personas of Dr. Bravestone and Franklin “Mouse” Finbar. The characters expected to face the same challenges as they did before, but they see that the game has altered their levels and powers. They finally find Spencer, who has taken on the persona of notorious thief Ming Fleetfoot. Meanwhile, Bethany goes to find Alex, the man they met in the game three years prior, and begs him to help her save her friends.
After fleeing from robbers and warlords, the main characters realize that they have been dwelling on the negative instead of enjoying what life has to offer. Spencer realizes that he needs to take control of his own life and seize the day like his original persona, Dr. Bravestone. Milo realizes that he should have made amends with Eddie years ago and it may be too late to rekindle their friendship since Eddie was recently diagnosed with a fatal illness. With the help of Bethany and Alex, the team defeats the game once again and *most* of them return to the real world. Which member decides to spend the rest of his days in Jumanji? You’ll have to see to find out.
Although nothing will ever beat the mind-boggling journey the original Jumanji movie brought it’s audience in 1995, Jumanji: The Next Level, offers a thrilling comedy that this generation of young viewers can relate to. The plot was well written, the digital artistry was created very well, and the audience was blessed by Danny DeVito’s presence as the hero we need by don’t deserve. As someone who has seen it’s predecessor Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle half a dozen times, I would say this sequel followed the original storyline really well and is a film I can enjoy even after watching it on a loop.
