In the world of television, life behind the camera isn’t all glitz and glam. Even in the 21st century, the public is often made unaware of the mistreatment that occurs to women in the workplace. The 2019 Academy Award winning film, Bombshell, exposes the workplace harassment and assault that occurred at the Fox News station during the 2016 presidential election.
The story is split into the perspective of three different women: anchor Gretchen Carlson, anchor Megyn Kelly, and young employee Kayla Pospsil. The story begins when Gretchen Carlson is demoted from Fox and Friends to a less popular time slot allegedly because she is not visually pleasing. She meets with lawyers with plans of suing Fox News CEO, Roger Ailes, due to years of sexual misconduct and harassment in the office. Later, Carlson was fired for expressing her opinion about the federal assault weapons ban, and follows through with her lawsuit. She encourages her other co-worker, like Megyn Kelly, to speak up about the misogyny that she experiences.
Although Kelly is well aware of the mistreatment that occurs at Fox News, she avoids the case. She instead must deal with the constant scrutiny of the public and reporters for disagreeing with Republican candidate, Donald Trump. She is receiving numerous threats for not supporting him through his candidacy and is forced to make amends with him for the sake of the station. Even through the political affair, Kelly agrees to speak up against Roger Ailes and support Carlson through her lawsuit. She even encourages Bill O’Reilly’s young employee, Kayla Pospisil, to do the same.
Devout Christian and Republican, Kayla Pospisil, has dreamt of not only working at Fox News since she was young, but having her own time slot as a political reporter. She recently went from being Carlson’s assistant to a staff member of Bill O’Reilly. Not only is she harassed by O’Reilly behind closed doors, but she is sexualized by Roger Ailes when given the chance to meet in his office. She tells him her dreams of becoming a news anchor for Fox, and to see if she has potential, she asks her to stand up, spin around, and lift her dress up to her hips so “he can see her legs”. She is left in tears and traumatized, and later joins forces with Carlson. After the case goes live, the women successfully expose Ailes as well as several other male employees for sexual harassment in the workplace, and he is fired from Fox News completely.
This movie sheds so much light on the dangers and hardships women face in the workplace and the obstacles they must fight through to be heard. It not only informs the audience that physical and mental manipulation are common for so many women, but also encourages those to speak up and support one another to put an end to this inappropriate and dangerous behavior. Although Margot Robbie’s character, Kayla Pospifil, was fictional, the sexual harassment she experienced were real events that occurred to women who worked at Fox over the years. Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman were perfect for the role of Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson and portrayed them as perfectly. You could feel the emotion and the pain through their dialogue and the passion they showed in each scene was immaculate. The plot line and the portrayal of the characters was great and worthy of the several Academy Awards the film received.
