Producers

Again we are greeted by the Don of Marvel television, Jeph Loeb. After getting some good not-so-classified information about Agentโ€™s of S.H.I.E.L.D. we now are privy to the details of the soon to be Cloak & Dagger adaptation. Initially the show was due to air on a different network so thankfully Freeform was there to save the day and pick up two of our favorite characters and give them some screen time. Talking about the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as well as the other Marvel television shows, Loeb really goes into depth on where we will find our pair of powerful heroes.

Loeb acknowledged that we as fans are well aware that these characters all exist in the greater MCU and so he seems a little too accustomed to talking about the potential inclusion of other heroes. Going so far as to say that the location of New Orleans, where the show is set to take place, does not have an abundance of superhero activity. Although he did note that there are easter eggs hidden throughout, such as Roxxon being seen in the trailer and being present in the Netflix adaptation of Daredevil. Loeb also talked about how Marvel wanted to tap into the young heroes market and so it was great to have this show be picked up along with another series The Runaways. This is a turn for Marvel and one that seems like it will pan out so be sure to watch Tyrone and Tandy become Cloak & Dagger!

While Jeph Loeb gave us a good amount of stuff to theorize about, our time with Joe Polaski was definitely a little more informative. From the get go Polaski seemed ready to roll and excited about having the two Marvel characters get their shine while maintain a dark and serious tone. Touching on the areas of the showโ€™s overall message, especially in relation to current events, and how we will see our characters evolve gave us a good picture of what to expect from Tandy and Tyrone. Freeformโ€™s Cloak & Dagger is really starting to come into clarity and show some real potential for a long lasting run.

Polaski did make a point to reflect on how the show will focus more on younger heroes and how if someone from the audience feels the need to intervene when seeing something wrong, than he has done his job right. Also highlighting on how there is a lot of teenage activism going one in our country right now and in their own way they are trying to be superheroes themselves, which warms anyoneโ€™s heart. We also got a bit of a sneak peak into what the first season of the show will entail such as Tyrone going up against an entire police department and Tandy taking on the evil corporation of Roxxon. These trials will display how Tyron uses his fear to form bravery and Tandy to take her cynicism and throw it away in the ocean of hope. The themes and messages of this show will be powerful to say the least so be sure to watch as Cloak and Dagger fight against the injustices of New Orleans.

While it was amazing to talk to the two leads of the show the heroes not featured on screen have given us loads to talk and theorize about so we are very thankful to have been granted access to Gina Prince-Bythewood. Having directed the showโ€™s pilot episode she has really set the tone for the series and after sitting in on the panel I can tell you right now that it will satisfy fans. Bythewood goes into a lot of how she overcame some of the challenges that initially posed certain problems for the show but also went into how excited she was to see the reactions of fans. It surely is a gratifying experience when your works pays off and Bythewood certainly has worked hard on bringing us a proper adaptation to what will be Freeformโ€™s Cloak & Dagger.

First noting how one of the first screenings of the pilot episode took place in a church and how symbolic that was to the showโ€™s content, Bythewood then talked about the lack of female characters in Marvel when there are plenty to choose from. She even went so far as to say how she enjoys portraying damaged women so as to really exemplify their power to overcome the problems that face them. Moving into describing her favorite moments, finding Aubrey and Olivia as the leading roles was definitely a high point for not just Bythewood but the show as a whole. This was incredibly notable because Bythewood expressed her distaste for having much older actors portray teenagers. In contrast she noted how one of the major problems when filming the first episode there was a big scene involving water and that the cast had difficulty swimming. Thankfully we will still enjoy that scene, but hopefully from a much more dry point of view, and may others to follow so remember to watch the duo of darkness and light take on the evil powers of New Orleans.
