Years after her first visit a magical nanny offers aid to a family going through some hardships. Mary Poppins Returns, directed by Rob Marshall, is a magical musical film bound to bring a bit of joy and a smile to those having a tough time. Which makes sense considering she is a magical and musical nanny. Growing up, there were quite a few iconic characters from film and TV that really stood out to me. Among them was Mary Poppins and her team of musical chimney sweeps that would take the Banks children on magical adventures that ultimately taught them important life lessons. Except this time it’s lamplighters, people whose job was to go around lighting the street lamps in London, instead of chimney sweeps. As a child, the film made me want to go into a chimney and dance on the rooftops in a musical fashion, but then I learned how dirty and dangerous chimneys truly are. Trust me when I say that you don’t want to get stuck in one.
The film begins with the Banks family having a bit of trouble with a burst pipe in their kitchen sink. While attempting to subside the water problem a couple of lawyers arrive to inform Michael and Jane Banks (Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer) that a loan that was taken out some time ago must be paid back in full or the house will be repossessed within a matter of days. While Michael does not have the money to pay it back immediately, he does own a number of shares within the bank which can pay off his loan. Unfortunately, he can’t find the certificate.
While searching for the certificate, Michael sends his children out to do some shopping. He then begins to dig through some old boxes in the attic and discovers an old kite from his childhood. In a fit of frustration, he begins to throw away some old things including the kite. While, the children are out, Georgie Banks (Joel Dawson) sees the kite flying by in the wind. He chases after it and manages to pull it down with aid of Jack (Lin – Manuel Miranda), a lamplighter. As they pull the kite down, on the other end of it is the one and only Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt).
Immediately she begins to assert her place and start her work in the way that only Mary Poppins does. She begins to use her wits and magic to create fun ways to get the children from reluctantly performing tasks and instruction to actively wanting to do something. While doing so, she provides positive advice and words of wisdom that always tend to lead to a solution to whatever troubles the family. Except, like the sophisticated lady that Mary Poppins is, she acts as if she has no idea that her words are helping.
Watching Mary Poppins assist the Banks family in their time of need definitely made me feel like a kid again. The use of her magic and clever ways to teach the children brought about a sense of nostalgia that is bound to happen for anyone that is a fan of the 1964 film. On top of that, there are a number of positive messages presented in the songs for people that are down in the dumps. Overall, I give the film an 8 out 10. While I did enjoy the film, there were a couple of scenes that did not completely fit in with the overall plot. In addition, there were a couple of moments that seemed unnecessary. Despite that, it definitely did the original Mary Poppins justice and is worth a watch.
